Considering "Glossamer"
Origin: Devon, England
In Robert Macfarlane’s Landmarks, he shares the word “glossamer” under a section titled “Gift Words”. I love the idea of gifting words to others, so here is an attempt to do so. Maybe more will appear on this Substack! Here is the definition from his book, which I highly recommend.
glossamer - shining filaments spun across huge areas of landscape by small spiders in autumn, usually perceptible only near dawn or dusk when the light is slant
I’m not certain, but I imagine it’s a combination of the word “gloss”, that sheen or shine of things, and “gossamer”, silk that spiderlings use to balloon through the air.
Hope these musings inspire you in some way.
